Survey of Payment Choice and Shopping Behavior (2008)
This survey collected payment and shopping information
from members of a specialty food store in the Northeast
United States that changed its payment acceptance practices
in October 2007. Prior to that date, the store accepted
only cash and checks, but members overwhelmingly used
cash. The limited acceptance of payment instruments
and the checkout procedure in the store posed challenges
for the store and its members. In October 2007, the
store began to accept debit cards. Within four months,
most members rapidly switched to using primarily debit
cards, drastically reducing their use of cash and checks.
The survey was conducted from November 2008 through
April 2009, and the results provide insight into the
effect of payment acceptance on consumer payment choice,
as well as how payment choice affects consumer food
shopping behavior.
Results forthcoming.
