This chart displays New England’s changing nativity profile. It depicts the shares of the region’s total population born in New England, born in other regions of the United States, and born in foreign countries. These data are reported by the Decennial Census and the American Community Survey. About 69 percent of New England residents in 2010 were born in the region. This is down from a peak of 77 percent in 1950, as domestic migration increased significantly in the second half of the twentieth century. In 1910, only about 6 percent of New England’s population was born elsewhere in the United States. By 2010, this number had grown to nearly 17 percent. In 2010, individuals born in foreign countries accounted for the remaining 14 percent of total population.

Another chart—Origin of New Englanders—depicts changes over time in where New England's foreign born population originated.
