On
Thursday, March 6th, the Public and Community Affairs
Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston hosted
its 6th annual Massachusetts LifeSmarts Consumer and
Financial Education Competition. Twenty-two
teams from towns and cities across the State, representing
12 high schools and one 4-H club came to the Bank's
New England Room to contend for the title of Massachusetts
State LifeSmarts champions. With officials and volunteers
from the Attorney General's office, FDIC, Mass Division
of Banks, Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Southern
NE, FDIC, Consumer World Inc, MA Council on Economic
Education and FRB Employees in their places, the competition
began with a congratulatory welcome from Lynn Browne,
Executive Vice President.
In a quiz show format, complete with buzzers, lights
and officials, the teams squared off in the early matches
(14 in all) to come up with the teams that would compete
in the semi-finals. Losing teams in the early matches
were given a second chance to advance to the semi-finals
by playing in wild card matches.
From the semi-final matches, two teams emerged the
victors: the 4-H Club of East Longmeadow, Hampden County
Fab Five and North Reading High School Green Team. Both
teams came to the final match ready and expecting to
take home the title of champions. Paula Lyons, consumer
reporter for WBZ-TV, added a celebrity twist to the
excitement as question master, and the teams forged
ahead giving it all they had.
North Reading had a strong start with an early lead.
The 4-H Club quickly rose to the challenge and the teams
were neck-to-neck. The tension rose as the teams matched
wits and scores were very close. Towards the end of
the match, North Reading rallied and pulled ahead to
beat the 4-H Club by 25 points. See
match-by-match results.
Richard Walker, Vice President of Public & Community
Affairs, closed the competition with words of thanks
to all involved in the planning and execution of the
competition and congratulations to the winning and runner
up teams. He also shared the Department's desire to
see the teams again at next year's competition.
The teams were presented trophies, savings bonds, and
other prizes at the awards ceremony that followed. The
winning team, North Reading High School - Green Team
will represent Massachusetts in the National Competition,
April 26 - 29, 2003 Lake Buena Vista, Florida. See
